There are so many ways to paint freckles on Blythe, here’s a technique that yields natural, varied freckles and is good for really subtle skin details.
Gather your supplies: You’ll need brown craft paint (more expensive artist paints have too much pigment, stick with the cheap stuff), a sharp toothpick, and water or acrylic extender to thin your paint
Dip the very tip of the toothpick in the paint and practice making tiny dots. experiment with the load of paint on the pick and the size of the dot you get. If your freckles look too dark or dimensional, thin your paint.
place a few tiny freckles on your blythe’s face
before the paint dries, use your finger to “pick up” most of the paint you just put down. reposition your finger and press it onto her face again. this will “duplicate” the freckle and thin out the original dots.
Getting it just right takes a little practice. Keep a wet tissue handy to wipe it off if you don’t like it. The goal here is to get very faint freckles for this layer.
Allow the first coat to dry. Repeat steps 3-6 one or two more times until you are satisfied with the “depth” of your freckles. The last layer should be left more opaque (don’t pull much off with your finger). View image full size

When applying the paint to a matte face, will it wipe off easily if you make a mistake?
brea - if the paint has only been on for a moment, then it should come off with some water on a paper towel.
Wow, that really helped! Thanks!
Great tutorials in this site….this is how I found out how to boggle eyes…and now do freckles too!
Thank you for making it so easy to understand
What kind of paint would you recommend for beauty spots?
connie - I like craft acrylics for freckles and beauty marks - you can wash it off if you change your mind or make a mistake.
Hiya =]
really good tutorial!
do you have to take apart the head to paint the freckles on?
Or can you keep her in one piece?
thanks!
x
Hi Charlotte, yes, you can paint freckles without taking her apart. The technique above works best on a matted face, and matting is much easier if she’s taken apart.
Ok, thanks for your reply :]
I will see if I have enough confidence to take her apart.
